Two Years, One Sale- On The Upcycle

This April 27th 2015 marks the two-year anniversary of this blog and my creative mission to reuse, re-purpose and restyle.

2-years-old

For me, Upcycling is all about having fun and being creative with items that would otherwise be discarded.  The biggest challenge for me has been the writing. I love to craft, but I struggle with writer’s block from time to time.  The ideas for projects often come but the words to adequately describe them do not. Although I am not blogging with quite the same frequency as I once was, I am still happy that I was able to continue and complete a few larger and more challenging projects this past year, like my Lane Cedar Hope Chest. After two years of creating I am inevitably left with too many items and not enough room to keep them all. I was excited to hear that my daughter’s school is sponsoring a flea market in early May.  This seemed like a great oppurtunity to have my first “flea market experience.” I have never tried to sell my projects before, so this is a huge first step for me.  What better way to re-energize and make room for new projects?

It’s spring cleaning time for On The Upcycle. That being said, it’s also a fun time to squeeze in a few smaller projects in the days leading up to the sale.

I love wooden boxes and picked this one up for 99 cents at Goodwill.  I didn’t care for the boxes original design, but the box itself was in great shape.

I used a spray on white primer to properly cover the previous design on the box.

I had a nice celestial print.  I have been in a colorful mood lately and wanted to utilize a design with a lot of color

I applied Mod Podge with a brush, and placed the print on the box top and front.

I painted the box blue and pink to match colors contained within the print

This whimsical celestial themed box is one of the items crafted specifically for the sale.

It’s Christmas Time: The Crocheted Snow People Family

For those who know me, it will be of no surprise that I consider myself a very sentimental person.  My husband and I have collected a lot of snowmen through the years for sentimental reasons.  When we started living together, a shelf decorated with most of the decorations we owned toppled to the ground.  Nothing on the shelf survived and everything lay on the floor in a broken mess.  I was feeling emotional having been through a rough patch in my life and this just sent me over the edge.  My boyfriend at the time  (my wonderful husband now) told me not to worry he would work on rebuilding the collection. Most of the items were from a previous life before we began our lives together and he wanted to turn something bad that happened into something good.  He calmed me down and started a new Christmas tradition that day forward. Every year he would gift me a new Christmas decoration and has kept his word every holiday since then. That night we went to Hallmark near our apartment at that time, and he bought me a ceramic snowman, I still treasure to this day.

For that reason I have a particular fondness for snowmen.  My husband and I always loved the snow people couples and after our daughter was born the snow people families. You can imagine my surprise when a friend, and an amazing crochet artist handed me the red and white Santa bag and I pulled this out!

It was us! It was our family!  I love it so much, I squealed and when I wasn’t squealing, I was smiling.  As someone who crafts and loves to create things, I simply adore handmade gifts.  I love the idea of someone giving the most precious thing in life to someone else: The gift of their time! Not to mention as I stated earlier, I am beyond sentimental, and this little snow people family proves those crocheted together are meant to stay together!

I have always loved crochet art, but don’t crochet or knit myself, and I am hoping one day my friend might be able to teach me.  It’s been years since I have tried, back then I just couldn’t seem to figure it out, but I am thinking I should give it another try.

Mini Terracotta Christmas Tree Decorations

I am always on the lookout for great kid’s craft ideas. Tis the season with the holidays around to corner, to take a break from the hustle and bustle and sit down with the kids for quality time. A great blog I follow, Easy Crafts For Children, posted a wonderful and unique christmas craft I think you will all love! Be sure and stop by to say hello to Izabel from the UK!

EasyCraftsForChildren

Good morning everyone, I wish you all a very good Sunday. Christmas is coming along and it is time to make some very nice decorations for the house or to give away.

Today I have this very simple Christmas decoration. It is to make a mini terracotta Christmas tree decoration. If you have some pine cones around your house, this add so much fun to the project to go outside and collect them to make your project. The terracotta pots I bought on amazon there is a lot of choice in sizes mine are about 6cm in diameter.

For this project, you need acrylic paint, glitter, mini terracotta pots, pine cones, glue, paint brush.

They are so simple and fun to make.

Just paint the bottom of the the mini terracotta with acrylic paint and let dry. For the top you put some glue and sprinkle some dry glitter.
